La comptine « The Wheels on the Bus » aurait vu le jour aux alentours des années 1930. Elle aurait été écrite pour occuper et divertir les enfants lors des trajets en bus scolaire.
Les paroles, simples et répétitives, sont généralement combinées à des gestes faciles à reproduire. Les gestes sont très simples, il suffit d’imiter les gestes décrits dans la chanson : avec les bras, on imite les roues qui tournent, les portes qui s’ouvrent et se ferment, les essuie-glace qui glissent sur la vitre…
